Brown Spots / Freckles / Uneven Pigmentation / Melasma

Brown spots, freckles and uneven pigmentation are a result of a history of sun exposure. Brown spots are referred to as lentigines (lentigo singular) and are flat, brown-colored patches that usually occur on the face, chest, and on the backs of the hands and arms. Freckles are common small, round, tan-colored spots that occur on the face, nose and shoulders. Blotchy, uneven pigmentation and melasma usually occur on the face, neck and chest and may be worsened in women by oral contraceptives or pregnancy.

Laser treatments provide a safe and effective way to deal with these pigmentation issues. Many different types of lasers can be used to treat these problems. Dr. Hearth and the staff at Granite Bay Dermatology and Laser Center can develop a treatment plan that is best for your skin's particular needs.

MedLite® Laser System

How does the MedLite® laser remove unwanted pigment from the skin?

The MedLite® laser is one of the most technologically advanced lasers for removing pigmented lesions,. The laser removes these pigments with the energy of light. The specialized light produced by the laser is absorbed by the pigmented lesion. The unwanted pigment is destroyed, thus removing or lightening the lesion. The MedLite® laser works best for the treatment of brown spots on the face, hands, arms, and legs.

How many treatment sessions will it take to remove the brown spots?

Usually one or two treatments will remove most brown spots. This is dependent on the nature of the brown spot being removed and the patient's skin type.

What can I expect after the treatment?

The treated spot(s) will be red and a special healing ointment should be applied to the area until healed. Depending on the individual and the location of the treated lesions, the spots usually take 5-7 days to heal. Areas other than the face may take a little longer.
